Empathic listening means attempting to read and understand the emotions of others- listening to understand.

Empathic listening takes time, but not nearly as much time as it does having to back up and correct misunderstandings, unexpressed and unresolved problems. 

Students want to be understood and you influence them much more strongly when you understand them (p.36, Building Classroom Disciplined)
